Alexandra (Ali) Baybutt is based in the UK and works in London and Europe as an artist, movement educator and researcher, often collaboratively. She completed her CMA training with LSSI/LIMS in 2010, Canada and assisted Karen Studd and Laura Cox on the first Moving Forth/Edinburgh program, 2011-13. Since then she has been contributing to programs in Belgium, Netherlands, China and Rome, working with WholeMovement faculty and others in the LBMS community. Ali is a Registered Somatic Movement Educator with ISMETA. She joined WholeMovement in 2023.
Ali writes on movement and culture for a range of spaces, inculding the book ‘Contemporary Dance Festivals in the Former Yugoslav Space: (in)dependent scenes’ in the Routledge Advances in Theatre and Performance series. This was the result of her PhD (Middlesex University, 2015-2020). Other publications can be found here . She convenes modules in performance practice on the BA Creative Arts and Humanities at University College London, and contributes to movement, practice-as-research and devising projects at Rose Bruford drama school on the European Theatre Arts program. She has been a guest teaching-artist at TrinityLaban, UK and the Tanzquatier Wien, AT amongst other contexts of education. She holds a BA (hons) from Laban, an MA from Goldsmiths College London, and is a Fellow of Higher Education Academy.
Her artistic work spans creating, performing, dramaturgy and writing. Ali regularly collaborates with musicians through the Play As We Are project with CMA Maya Felixbrot; with Barefoot Opera; and with Terpsichorean Sonics.
